Reforestation Redesigned
A revolutionary approach to native reforestation.
“Just becasuse it’s always been done that way does not mean there isn’t a better way!”
Continuous, Uninterrupted Growth
Seedlings develop without disturbance, resulting in stronger, more resilient plants.
Enhanced Root Development
The uninterrupted growth allows for deeper, more extensive root systems.
Reduced Mortality
Eliminating transplant shock significantly increases seedling survival rates in the field.
Faster Establishment
Plants adapted to their container environment transition more smoothly to field conditions.
Improved Long-term Performance
Stronger initial growth leads to better long-term tree health and carbon sequestration potential.
No Spray GrassShield
GrassShield: the ultimate defense against grass, the silent enemy of young trees. This innovative cardboard barrier, secured by the PlantCone, suppresses grass growth around your seedlings, allowing them to thrive without competition for water and nutrients.
Healthier Native Forests Planted Faster & Cheaper
Brilliantly Simple
Step 1: Sow or Prick Out
The PlantCone when assembled is triangular making them easily stackable in the greenhouse. By planting directly into the PlantCone, the traditional use of plastic pots or root trainers is eliminated.
Step 2: Drill & Drop
Using a simple battery drill with a 50mm auger makes planting out in the field 10x faster with less strain on the body.
“We are very excited about the future for our native forests, the revolutionary PlantCone is literally a game-changer”
– Paul Tranter, Founder and Inventor
No Transplant Shock
Because seedlings are propagated and planted in the PlantCone, they avoid the acclimatisation phase, resulting in stronger, healthier trees.
Protects Against Pests and Sprays
The PlantCone is 40cm tall to protect plants from predators, aid in plant location, minimize water loss, and create favorable micro-climates. Additionally, it safeguards plants from chemical sprays and mechanical damage during maintenance activities.
Anchored Naturally Prevents Windblown Litter
The revolutionary PlantCone design incorporates root holes in the underground section. Roots drive into the soil effectively anchoring PlantCone in place until it naturally degrades into the soil. There is also an option to use a stake for exposed sites.
New Zealand Made
The PlantCone, manufactured in New Zealand primarily from recycled pulp, is designed for durability in harsh environments. Its food-safe, has an FDA-compliant moisture barrier, high bursting strength, and is fully recyclable.
“Into the forest I go, to lose my mind and heal my soul”
Smart For Natives. Smart For The Wallet
Paul invented the PlantCone in response to the massive costs associated with traditional planting methods when he decided to reforest 20ha of his farm. Typically, trees are planted at a density of 10,000 per hectare, with each tree protected by a separate plastic or cardboard guard and stake.
What truly sets PlantCone apart is the elimination of several steps in the propagation process. This innovation offers cost savings and speed advantages at all phases of planting and growth.
Comparison Table PlantCone Vs Conventional Planting.
Extensive field testing planting seedlings with PlantCone was seven to ten times faster than conventional practises.
Aspect | EarthShield Planting | Conventional Planting |
---|---|---|
Time Efficiency | 10 PlantCone in 3 minutes | 3 minutes per seedling (including laying out materials, planting, adding shield, and staking) |
Speed | 7x faster | Slower due to multiple steps and components |
Labor Requirement | Lower labour needs | Higher labour needs |
Components | Integrated tree guard | Separate seedling, guard, and stake |
Setup Time | Minimal | Significant |
Planting Process | Streamlined | Multi-step |
Cost Efficiency | Potentially lower due to reduced labor | Higher due to additional materials and labor |
Scalability | High | Moderate |
Environmental Impact | Potentially lower due to fewer materials | Higher due to multiple components |
Suitability for Large Projects | Ideal | Less ideal due to time and labor constraints |
This table highlights the key differences between the PlantCone planting method and conventional planting, emphasizing the efficiency and benefits of using the PlantCone system.
What is a Plant Cone?
The PlantCone ™ is an innovative, environmentally friendly, bio-degradable, propagation pot and guard designed to simplify the process of planting seedlings and small plants. Manufactured in NZ using a majority of recycled pulp they are specifically designed to offer protection in the harshest of conditions.
How does the Plant Cone work?
The PlantCone ™ is a simple, patented folded card that creates a perfect environment for young plants. By pushing into the soil it eleminates transplant shock and forms a conical hole that’s ideal for seedling roots drive into deeper ground. The high sides function as a guard protecting seedlings from pests and sprays.
What are the benefits of using a Plant Cone?
PlantCone ™ is a cheaper alternitive and makes the propogation and planting easier, faster, and more efficient.
What materials are Plant Cones made from?
The PlantCone ™ is made in New Zealand using a majority of recycled pulp and is coated with a an FDA compliant moisture barrier. The material is fully recyclable with a PH of 7.00-8.00 and has a high bursting strength. During trials the PlantCone ™ was able to remain intact in the field for up to 18 months and cope with some inundation over a period of time in normal riparian conditions.
Are Plant Cones suitable for all types of plants?
Plant Cones are designed for seedlings and small plants. Although origionally designed for New Zealand native trees they work well for a variety of young plants and seedlings, including vegetables, flowers, and herbs, making it versatile for different gardening needs.
How does the Plant Cone prevent transplant shock?
From seed to maturity plants grown in PlantCone ™ are stronger and healthier. Seeds and seedlings are propogated directly into PlantCone ™. By providing a protective environment and a tailored planting hole, PlantCone ™ minimizes stress on seedlings during the transplanting process.
What benefits does the high side of the Plant Cone offer?
The high side of the Plant Cone acts as a guard, protecting seedlings from pests and sprays, which can be crucial for their early development.
Can the Plant Cone be reused?
Yes. If a seedling dies then PlantCone ™ can be easily resued if still viable. PlantCone ™ is made from durable materials that can withstand multiple uses, making it an environmentally friendly option for gardeners.
Where can I purchase a PlantCone ™?
You can purchase the PlantCone ™ directly from our website or through selected gardening retailers that carry our products.
“We’re planting more trees together”
The cost savings and speed of propogation means we can restore more of our native forests, but wait!
There’s more.
We are passionate about the cause and have a number of reforestation projects funded in part by sales of the PlantCone.
Reforestation Projects
Regenerating 20ha of degraded land on the farm is simply the start. We are supporting projects across the globe.
Tracking Growth
With have partnered with Open Forest Protocol bringing unprecedented transparency and integrity. Ground data is collected with all project data becoming immutable public record, and accessible to the world through the interactive mapping.
Long Term Commitment
Our dedication extends far beyond the initial planting of trees. We provide continuous support for the growth and upkeep of our forests, ensuring a thriving future for the forests you help establish.
The Seed Hunter Tribe
Sales support our charity The Seed Hunter Tribe Trust bringing a day filled with fun and learning as we visit schools across New Zealand. Students join us for an unforgettable adventure, where they’ll discover the art of harvesting seeds and crafting seed bombs for themselves.
