“Let’s Plant Trees” – It’s Not That Easy!
We purchased Oak Dene Farm in 2020. A hundred and fifty acres set in the stunning Orinoco valley. Previous owners had set the property up as a beef farm, to maximise profits required maximum grazing.
Our plan is to run stock as we have to put bread on the table but also to replant as much of the land as we can.
However, it’s not that easy, even if you have the funds. We soon ran into issues with not only sourcing local plants but sourcing plants at a reasonable price. Local plants are better because they have adapted to the local environment. This is an issue rewilders across the community have encountered.
The only option is to create our own nursery. We have committed initially fifty acres to rewilding and intend to convert an old barn to a greenhouse and potting rooms with two acres of growing on space.
There is capacity to serve the projects on the farm but to also supply further local projects.
I see this as a model for a network of Tāne Nurseries committed to growing local plants on a non-profit basis.

Funding The First Tāne Nursery … We Need YOU!
You can make a difference, help rewild New Zealand because every tree needs a loving human.
Tāne is a non for profit project to be run by volunteers. We are hoping to raise $50,000 to creat the infrastructure to support this great goal. Funds go towards the first nursery and batch of seedlings.

Use of funds
We have set aside a 20’x40′ steel framed building to convert to a greenhouse. There is a further hactre set aside for seed beds. The funds go directly towards nursery infrastructure, support, seed purchases and planting projects.
